What do you need for a two month trip to Chile/Argentina?

Visa:
No visa is needed for Swiss if you stay no löonger than three month. If you stay more then 3 months it is easy to just cross the border to Argentina and come back to Chile.

Carnet de Passage:
For the bikes you need a Carnet de Passage (this is what TCS told us). You get the Carnet from the TCS (Touring Club Schweiz) for 200.- Swiss Franc if you are member of the TCS.

After having passed the border between Chile and Argentina we believe that it is not necessary to have a Carnet. It can even be worse with a Carnet because customs do not know how to fill them out. Another Swiss guy we met did travel without a Carnet for his bike and he didn't have any problems.

Insurance:
It seems that you do not need liability insurance for the bike for Chile but you might for Argentina. We got insurance for South America from American International Underwriters thru K.-H. Nowag Versicherungen (Rieslingstr. 40, D-65207 Wiesbaden). I aslo got a physical damage insurance (incl. theft) for my Pan. Therefore you need an appraisal for bikes older then 7 years. I got the appraisal at the Check Point of the Zürich Versicherung (for free if you have your insurance there).
